Football players wear backplates primarily for protection. A backplate is a piece of equipment worn on the back of the player's shoulder pads, designed to provide extra protection to the lower back and spine area. This area is vulnerable to impact during tackles and collisions, which can lead to injuries if not properly protected.

Here is a guide on how to attach, fit and install a gridiron backplate:

Instructions:

Materials Needed:

  • Shoulder pads
  • Backplate
  • Screws/hardware (included with AK backplate)
  • Screwdriver or tool

Steps:

  1. Prepare Your Equipment: Lay out your shoulder pads and the backplate. Make sure you have the necessary screws and tools on hand.

  2. Locate Attachment Points: Examine the shoulder pads and the backplate. The backplate should have pre-drilled holes for attaching it to the shoulder pads. Similarly, the shoulder pads should have corresponding attachment points or holes near the lower back area. If your shoulder pads don't have holes at the back, you can use the backplate as a guide and drill your own holes.

  3. Align the Backplate: Position the backplate over the attachment points on the shoulder pads. The backplate should align properly with the lower back area of the shoulder pads.

  4. Insert Screws: Insert the screws through the pre-drilled holes in the backplate and align them with the corresponding holes on the shoulder pads. The backplate may have multiple holes to allow for different adjustments. Use the appropriate screwdriver or tool to securely fasten the screws.

  5. Tighten the Screws: Gently tighten the screws, the screws should be tight enough to hold the backplate securely in place.

  6. Test for Fit: After attaching the backplate, put on the shoulder pads and adjust the fit. The backplate should sit comfortably and provide adequate protection to your lower back and spine.

  7. Make Adjustments (if necessary): If the backplate feels uncomfortable or obstructs your movement, you may need to make minor adjustments. Some shoulder pads and backplates allow for customization, so consult the instruction manual if provided.

  8. Double-Check the Secure Attachment: Before using the shoulder pads in a game or practice, ensure that the backplate is securely attached. Give it a gentle tug to make sure it doesn't come loose.
